As a college, we know that home learning encourages the development of independent learning skills and allows all to take full ownership of their learning.

Developing good home learning skills at an early age will help to prepare students for the demands at Key Stages 4 and 5 and will in turn aid progression and development beyond Cardinal Griffin Catholic College.

Therefore, we place great emphasis on home learning.

Consistent home learning has been proven to increase the success of our students. All receive a range of home learning tasks every day from at least 2 different subject areas.

KS3 students should spend approximately 30-40 minutes per subject each night, and KS4 and 5 students should spend approximately 1 hour per subject each night. The college does offer a home learning club to support students with all subject areas, and all home learning is posted on Show My Homework.

Tips for Effective Home Learning

Check Show My Homework so you are aware of all pieces of work set (if you need any help with this – contact the college for your personal access details).
Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to complete home learning tasks.
Avoid having your child do work with the television on or in places with other distractions.
Be positive about home learning. Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about home learning will be the attitude your child acquires.
Help your child with time management. Establish a set time each day for completing home learning tasks. Don‘t let your child leave work until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects.
Stay informed. Talk with your child‘s teacher. Communicate with your child's teacher via their pupil planner about the quality and quantity of work set.
